When we started the aim was to raise awareness of male unpaid Carers, many of whom are looking after a relative or friend alone, and funds for Carer Support South Lakes who do an amazing job of supporting unpaid Carers.

It can be very isolating being an unpaid Carer, and we men are not so good at saying how we feel. When we started the Male Carers Group there were eight or nine of us. Now, we have about 50 men in the group. We meet up once a month, and it provides a short break.

The Keswick to Kendal Challenge (K2K) is a 30 mile walk and takes in six lakes and it is mostly on footpaths and bridleways – but you don’t have to walk the whole route – you can put together a relay team and split it up. This year we’re adding a 6-mile family walk from Staveley to Kendal so more people can join us.

I had thought of entering the Great North Run for a few years as it was on my bucket list of things to do. I had just celebrated my 60th birthday so wanted a fundraising challenge.

As a friend of CSSL, I was already aware of the wonderful work they do to support unpaid Carers, so it was ideal to represent and run for the charity, when the opportunity arose. I was also keen to raise awareness of young and older Carers and the wonderful unpaid work that they do.

By raising money for the event, it also motivated me and helped me with my training runs. I improved my overall fitness and health. I set a target of running the 13.1 miles in 2 hours and finished in 1:52:56. I had a huge sense of achievement and relief. The crowds continuously cheering runners on were amazing. There was a great atmosphere throughout, even when running in the unexpected thick fog and rain!

I would highly recommend this event, especially if you get the chance to support the charity. After my training runs, my fitness soon started to improve and I became very motivated to get fitter. It actually became addictive and I really wanted to achieve my goal. Knowing I was raising money for CSSL motivated me more to get out running even on the wet days! I reached and smashed my fundraising target, raising nearly £800, whilst raising awareness and support for CSSL.
