You can still donate to Robert Powneys’ Vitual Channel Swim. So far he has raised £1,117.00 and overcome injury to complete his epic challenge.

Robert Powney, from Windermere, has completed his virtual “Swim the Channel” despite an injury that left him on crutches. It has taken him 30 days to complete a total distance of 22 miles at his local pool – which is the equivalent of swimming the English Channel.

Robert swam around 900 metres a day despite injuring his knee shortly after starting the attempt. The injury left him having to use crutches to get in and out of the pool.

“I’m really pleased to have completed the 22-mile swim,” says Robert. “I had a couple of setbacks, but I was determined to carry on.

“On what should have been day three of the swim I tore ligaments in my knee and leg while out walking which delayed me and added to the challenge!

“Every time I got in the pool – the first ten minutes seem to take a lot of effort. But after that, I got into a rhythm, and it got easier.”

Although he’s completed the 22-mile challenge he says he is going to continue swimming as he’s enjoyed it so much – so he’s begun a virtual swim back towards Dover!

“I would like to say a big thank you to all those who have made donations. It has made the challenge so worthwhile.”

Robert, who is a carer himself and looks after his wife Gwen, has now raised around £1,117.00 .

He was inspired to take on the challenge after seeing the support work done for young Carers by the Kendal based charity.

“We were in Dorset and I heard a child in a group say they were on the best holiday they had ever been on,” says Robert.

“It transpired that they were young Carers who were on a respite holiday to give them a break from their caring roles. I decided then that I wanted to do something for the charity to help young carers.

“It broke my heart to see children as young as five were caring for their families. I hope the funds I’ve raised will give young Carers the chance to be children again or to spend some quality time with their loved ones without having to act as carers.”

Running the 41st Great North Run, the largest half marathon in the world, on Sunday 11th September 2022, five volunteers will be taking part to raise awareness for Carer Support South Lakes and the the work they do supporting unpaid Carers.

The Great North Run is the largest half marathon in the world, taking place annually in North East England each September. Participants run between Newcastle upon Tyne and South Shields.

Carer Support South Lakes is an independent, local charity and network partner of Carers Trust. We provide a range of services to support and enhance the lives of unpaid carers of all ages throughout South Lakeland.

There are thousands of Carers in South Lakeland. Many juggle work, school, or other commitments along with their caring role, and most don’t think of themselves as Carers, nor do they realise the range of services available to help them, such as access to information, emotional support, advocacy, financial support and opportunities to take a break. Taking on a caring role can lead to feelings of isolation, frustration, depression and can result in ill health.

The Coronavirus pandemic has had a massive impact on the lives and wellbeing of unpaid carers within South Lakes, increasing isolation and negatively affecting peoples health and wellbeing.

The Great North Run is an annual event that Carer Support South Lakes participates in where five volunteers raise money for unpaid Carers as well as achieving personal goals.

This year’s participants are Tim Farron MP, Martin Saunders (one of our Trustees), Michael Crowe, Alison Magee-Barker (back for more) and Phil Jones.

The money raised will go towards 1-1 support, sitting service, wellbeing, support groups and counselling.

Walk 1000 miles for Carers

Walking to raise awareness for Carer Support South Lakes because of the work they do supporting unpaid Carers.

When Jane started walking towards her walk 1000 miles challenge, the idea behind it was to fill a void. 2020 wasn’t easy on anyone, especially unpaid Carers like Jane. Last March, she broke her ankle which put her in a tight spot because her husband Jimmy had dementia and required round the clock active care and attention, but they managed with help from her daughters, neighbours and online deliveries. Then, in June, Jane lost her mother and, tragically, six weeks later, Jimmy.

Jane says, “It was all somewhat surreal, organising two funerals with only limited numbers allowed due to Covid, then not being able to grieve properly as contact with family members was so limited. Carer Support South Lakes knew exactly how to help and put me in touch with a bereavement counsellor. Having someone to talk to definitely helped”.

“As time passes, I am beginning to feel stronger, both mentally and physically and found that walking is really helping. We all know the benefits of exercise but when you’re feeling so broken with grief and loneliness it can be really tough to find the motivation to get moving”.

Setting herself the challenge of walking 1000 miles in a year initially felt like “way too much of a commitment” but then after some more thought she realised it would be a great way to keep up momentum to help her through the challenging times ahead as well as an opportunity to raise some much needed funds for CSSL, “especially after the support I have received from them in the last year”, she says.

She has also laid down the gauntlet for others within the charity to join her and currently has a small posse uniting in the endeavour.  Two CSSL volunteers (Rowena and Sharron) , a friend (Karen) and 2 team members (Nicola and James), each walking their own 1000 miles, making 6000 miles in total!

Please would you consider encouraging them as they aim to fit this challenge into their busy schedules, by giving a donation via Just Giving? Your generosity is very gratefully appreciated – thank you so much!
